One of the most common and (at the same time) dangerous ideas that we humans are prone to is something called the “bandwagon effect”.
It is a phenomenon where people act a certain way because others are doing it.
In my opinion, this effect leads to more failure, frustration, and stunted growth in life than most people realize. But worse than that, it leads to failure in business.
For whatever reason, one of the first things people do when trying to sell a product/service is to look at what everybody is doing and then copy it.
And when done enough times, you get what Dan Kennedy wisely calls “marketing incest”.
This is where all the advertisements, copy, emails, etc. seem to smell stink alike … no one is producing anything original and fresh, everyone seems to be a rehash of everyone, and by principle, they will all have very similar, mediocre results.
And this is why I am fundamentally against “swiping” or “funnel hacking”.
You are committing and contributing to marketing incest.
So what is the alternative you ask?
Well, you have to become what I call a “marketing snob”.
It is based on the reverse-bandwagon effect (also known as snob effect) in which people avoid doing certain things because they believe that other people are doing it.
To give you a bit of insight into the mindset of what a “marketing snob” means, here is a paragraph from the magnificent book, “Lead the Field” by Earl Nightingale:
“To become diamond miners, the first thing we need to do is to break away from the crowd, and quit assuming that because people in the millions are living that way, it must be the best way.
It’s not the best way; it’s the average way.
The people going the best way are way out in front. They’re so far ahead of the crowd, you can’t even see their dust anymore. They’re the people who live and work on the leading edge … the cutting edge.
And they mark the way for all the rest.”
And that, my friend, is why you need to decide today to fully embrace the mindset of being a marketing snob.
That is the only way to build a deeper bond with your audience, create a business that grows and thrives for years and decades … and take your sales, engagement, and brand loyalty to the next level.
