Many midnights ago, I read the story of “The boy who cried wolf”.
If you have not read it, it is basically about a boy who lived in a little village and was always playing stupid pranks.
Many times he will run out of his house, shouting “Wolf! Wolf! Wolf” …
And everyone in the village will run out with weapons to kill the wolf, only to find that it was a prank.
He did it a couple times and people stopped listening to him.
They just remained in their houses, any time he started shouting.
After a while, an actual wolf came by and he started shouting … but the villagers thought it was a prank as usual, so nobody came out to help him.
And I think he died (from what I remember).
This is a very folksy story but it reminds me of marketers.
Many marketers play such silly pranks like this that makes their prospects “desensitized” to them.
I’m sure you’ve seen such pranks before.
Like when there is a deadline to purchase a product, but after the deadline has passed, you get another email saying “I am extending the deadline for XYZ reason”.
Which is obviously a nonsensical reason.
Most people just do it as a trick to make extra sales from a launch or something.
But to me, it is just pure disrespect for your prospects’ intellect.
And you are actually training your audience not to trust you and not to respect your deadlines.
Do it enough times, and people start to ignore you altogether, even when you are saying something that is actually true and/or valuable for them.
This example is about sticking to the deadlines you set, but it can be about any other thing.
Don’t lie or trick your prospect into doing anything.
Not only is it unethical, you’re making your prospects look stoopid.
And nobody likes to look stoopid.
That said, if you are looking for ways to get new clients (who are not only willing but eager to pay a premium for your services) without doing such silly tricks, then check out my book:
“Client Surge”.
It is 100% free and it shows you how to get more prospects to buy your offers (and as a result, improve their lives) without coming across as a desperate salesman or spammer.
