My first business-skam

Many years ago, I started out as a freelance web designer.

I was new to web design, but I was even newer to business, so I did what everybody does at the start:

I asked Mr Google for advice.

And as expected, I got the same bad advice everybody gets.

So I created an Instagram page, started posting content, messing with hashtags, posting times, comments, etc.

And while most of it was a massive waste of time, I did one thing that me some results:

DMs.

I sent random DMs to businesses who didn’t yet have a website and I actually got some (very temporary) traction.

The first person that responded was a furniture business owner who said he was “interested”. The only thing is, he didn’t trust me. So he wanted us to meet physically.

I was excited to get a client, so I packed my bags and travelled inter-state to meet him.

We had a discussion and decided to work together.

I charged about $50 for the website back then, so he paid $25 upfront and I got to work.

I did the best I could with the experience I had. In hindsight it was not the best of websites, but for that price he didn’t deserve much.

After slaving over the website for a few weeks, I completed it and sent the link to my client. Then I got the biggest shock of my life:

Mr client said he didn’t need the website anymore.

“What??”

“You don’t need the website anymore??”

“After I have wasted the past several weeks of my life on this project???”

And that’s how the project went up in flames. And along with it, my precious $25.

I followed up for months, but never got the balance of the work I did.

While it was a bad experience, it was my start into the world of web design and development.

Fast forward to today, I’ve worked with several clients on web-related projects and I have learnt not only how to create beautiful websites, but also (and more importantly), how to create websites that are “primed” to get you leads, customers and sales.

Which brings me to the crux of this email:

Starting today, my agency, IKON Media, is taking new web design & development clients.

But we need to talk first.

Over the call we’ll discuss your goals, what you aim to achieve and how your website can move you closer to your goal. Then we’ll see if we are a good fit for each other.
