How to sexify a boring product.

Whenever we marketers dish out advice, we often say things like:

* Discover what keeps your prospects up at night

* Drill deep into the pain/problem

* Paint a picture of the positive future, etc

While these are really good pieces of advice, there is just one problem:

They only work for “sexy” products. (i.e. products that are inherently interesting)

But if you sell a boring, bland and dry offer (like socks, for instance), you can’t apply this.

I don’t know of anybody who stays up at night because they need a new pair of socks (there probably is someone, I just don’t know her).

So what do you do in this case? How do you sell a “plain vanilla” product?

Well, here’s how a coffee brand did it:

Some years back, I came across a coffee brand that was doing extremely well using email marketing. They had built a passionate list and their sales was steadily increasing (I think they got to about $200k/year or so)

But if you’re anything like me (i.e. not a coffee nerd), you don’t get butterflies in your stomach at the thought of coffee.

It is just “another” product.

So how did this brand make coffee sexy?

Well, here is how:

* They carved out a passionate niche for themselves that was unrelated to their offer (i.e. Christians)

* 90% of their emails revolved around the more interesting and passionate niche

* The remaining 10% of the emails talked about actual coffee.

I.e. They sold coffee to Christians.

You can take this simple advice and apply it in a million different ways (your imagination is your limit with this)…

But however you do it, if you sell a boring offer (like socks, chalk or water bottles), you need to choose a passionate niche (preferably a niche you belong to yourself) … build a relationship with your list based on that passion … then sell your offer as a byproduct.

And that my palsky, is how you sexify a boring product.

If this was helpful, then there are much more profit-making, email tricks where that came from.

Unfortunately, I don’t share most of them in my emails. I use them for clients day-in, day-out at my agency, IKON Media.
