Elon Musk’s business management philosophy

One of the most profitable things I’ve learnt up in this business is something the marketing legend, Gary Halbert calls:

Operation Moneysuck!

Essentially, it means that you (as a business owner) should focus on the highest-value tasks in your business (i.e. the tasks that bring you the highest return/reward) and you should totally outsource everything else.

Most people interpret this as “do what brings in the money” (i.e. sales, marketing, lead generation, etc.) and while that is important, there are other things that are more important than money.

You also have to consider what brings you the most joy, what you personally enjoy doing, what will make you excited to work every day.

This reminds me of an interview that Elon Musk did several years ago when Tesla was still struggling.

In that interview, he mentioned that most people think he does a lot of “people management” at Tesla, but instead, he actually spends more time with the engineers, designing the rockets, optimising and fine-tuning.

That is his Operation Moneysuck!

That is what he was uniquely qualified to do, that brought the greatest joy and satisfaction for him, and in turn, brought the greatest return for his business.

Every other thing was then outsourced.

Which brings me back to you:

What is your Operation Moneysuck?

What are you the best at doing, that brings you the highest returns (whatever that is)?

For most people, it won’t be marketing.

And while I recommend EVERY business owner to learn and understand how to sell/market, I also understand not everybody wants to be in the trenches actually implementing the marketing.
