If you have been in online marketing for any length of time, you must have come across the term “funnel hacking” .
Which basically means reverse engineering someone else’s marketing campaign and (usually) copying or swiping what they are doing.
In my opinion, this is a stoopid practice and I recently watched a movie by Adam Sandler that proves my point.
The movie is called:
“You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah”
I actually had no interest in the movie – it just came up when I was casually scrolling Netflix.
When I saw the title, I was like “That’s an absurd title”.
I was about to scroll away, when I saw the picture of Adam Sandler on the movie cover and guess what?
I didn’t hesitate – I just watched the movie.
It was not the “copy” or “headline” that sold me. It was the picture of Adam Sandler.
Nothing else could have made me watch that movie.
And this experience proves that “funnel hacking” is stupid at best, destructive at worst.
Imagine someone else trying to “swipe” the format of that title – it will fail woefully.
Simply because (in my experience), the title was not what was effective – it was the person.
Same thing applies to your business.
Yes, you can glean ideas, insights, structures, formats, etc from other people.
But thinking something will work for you, simply because it worked for someone else is delusion.
We all have different relationships with our customers, different price points, different unique advantages, different brands, different target markets, etc.
And many times, it is not just the “writing” or “ad” that does the selling – it works in unison with so many other factors.
Marketing rarely ever works in isolation.
In short: Stop swiping.
So what should you do instead?
Two things:
- Be self aware.
- Be a problem solver.
If you are self aware enough to know what will work for you (based on your market, your positioning, your credibility over the years), then you pretty much know what ideas will resonate with your audience.
Now that you’re self aware, instead of blindly copying, simply take conscious steps to solve whatever marketing problem you have,
Think through the problem, come up with YOUR own unique solution to the problem. Something that will work for your specific circumstance.
Yes, you can get inspired by other people’s marketing.
But at the end of the day, you need to come up with a solution that is tailored to you.
That being said, if you are a health/wellness professional and marketing is something you need help with, then you can check out my book:
